Induction of FEC Academician and Director of IPO Argentina Dr. Gerardo Perillo into the Argentina National Academy of Sciences

FEC Academician and Director of IPO Argentina Dr. Gerardo Perillo was inducted into the Argentina National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his life-long dedication to science. The National Academy of Sciences is pleased to invite you to the Induction Ceremony of Dr. Gerardo Perillo to celebrate his scientific and life achievements and what he has done for the development of Argentina.

The event will take place on Friday 12 May, at 6:30 pm (UTC -3) both in person and virtually. Dr. Perillo will give a lecture on Wetlands and Tidal Flats.

Introduction:

Gerardo Perillo was born in Buenos Aires. He graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires and obtained his PhD in Oceanography at Old Dominion University (USA). He has been living in Bahía Blanca since 1982.

He is currently a CONICET Senior Researcher and an Extraordinary Consultant Professor at the Universidad Nacional del Sur, where he has been a professor since 1982. In his teaching career, he has been a full professor at the Université du Québec à Rimouski and also worked as an associate professor for more than 15 years at the Universidad de Concepción and at the Universidad de Mar del Plata.

He is a member of the Future Earth Coast Academy and of the Steering Committee of Future Earth Coast, where he is also the International Program Officer for Latin America. In addition to having integrated and coordinated different national and international organizations and working groups, he is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the Red de Observaciones Marinas Argentina (ROMA) and of the Technical Advisory Board of Pampa Azul.

His work has focused on the geomorphology and dynamics of coastal and continental environments, with special emphasis on sediment transport dynamics and physical-biological interactions. Also, together with Dr. A. J. Vitale and Dr. M. C. Piccolo, he has been the creator and developer of the network of Coastal Environmental Monitoring Stations (EMAC) that are the instrumental basis of ROMA.

His output includes more than 200 papers in international journals, and 70 book chapters in national and international publishers. He has written and edited 17 books and special issues of journals. He is a member of the editorial board of five international journals. He has supervised 30 doctoral theses (6 more in development) and more than 80 human resources between researchers and scholarships from different organizations.

He has received numerous awards and distinctions at home and abroad, and has been on the jury of several international awards.

He has been married since 1977 to Dr. M. Cintia Piccolo and has 2 children: Mauricio and Vanesa. His hobbies are beaches and golf.
