TALK
- Governing the Coast: Vulnerability, Adaptation and Transformation
- Dr Carmen Elrick-Barr, Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia
It is over 50 years since the term ‘integrated coastal zone management’ become the good-practice standard for responding to the complex (and wicked) challenges facing the coast and coastal communities. Yet despite half a century of practice, integrated management remains elusive, and pressures on the coast (e.g., climate change, population growth, industrial development) increase. As the impacts of climate change are increasingly felt, disasters are increasingly common, as are calls for innovation and transformation to reduce vulnerability and support equitable transition to more sustainable (and just) coasts. How to achieve these transitions, when past actions have not delivered the large-scale successes sought, remains unclear. This presentation will share lessons from over five years of research on vulnerability, innovation and adaptive capacity in coastal Australia. It aims to prompt discussion around the next frontiers in coastal governance research and practice: what do we need to know (and do) to achieve systemic change?
