2023 World Coastal Forum

The World Coastal Forum responds to needs expressed by several global environmental agreements for the creation of a global mechanism to address challenges to sustainable coastal management. The WCF process began in 2022 to encourage and support a multi-stakeholder approach to strengthen protection, conservation management and restoration of the world’s coastal ecosystems for the long-term benefit of people and biodiversity.

We invite and welcome you to join us for an international conference on the pressing coastal management and restoration issues worldwide being organised in Yancheng  in the Jiangsu Province of the People’s Republic of China, between 25 and 27 September 2023. The intertidal and coastal wetlands of Yancheng are designated as China’s first coastal natural World Heritage Site in recognition of it global significance for migratory waterbirds and renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity.

The Conference is hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Forest and Grassland Administration and the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government and supported by Eco Foundation Global and the World Coastal Forum Coordination Group, including representatives from government agencies, international conventions, non-government organisations and advisors.

The Conference focuses on four main themes:

Addressing challenges in coastal wetland conservation and protection: Coastal ecological conservation and wetland ecosystem protection through action in the face of a changing climate.

Promoting coastal conservation knowledge and best practices : evidence gathering and guidance on best practice for coastal ecosystem restoration and management: migratory birds and other species and habitat conservation.

Ensuring sustainable development in coastal regions: promoting models including establishing of a “Demonstration zone for green and low-carbon development”,  and other global examples of eco-tourism, clean energy and net-zero industrial development, low-carbon transition, sustainable eco-tourism, ensuring working coastal wetlands through local, national and international action and cooperation.

Raising awareness and engaging coastal communities, decision-makers, business leaders and other key stakeholders in coastal ecosystem conservation.

The Conference includes a high level segment, four thematic areasfor a with plenary presentations, side events and workshops. It offers opportunities for additional workshops and an exhibition space. Participation will be predominantly on-site in Yancheng and will offer online  participation and broadcast.
